Acrylic paint: tubes, pots or bottles — which should you buy first?

“Bold and easy” is printed on the cover of a whole category of adult colouring books, and it means something specific: thick outlines, large uncluttered shapes, and very little fine detail. Colour goes down quickly and stays inside the lines without close concentration. If detailed colouring books have felt more like work than rest, or if small shapes are tiring to follow, this is the format that fixes it.
Intricate pages ask for a fine nib, a steady hand and a lot of time per square inch. A bold page asks for none of that. A shape the size of a thumb can be filled in a few strokes with the broad end of a marker, which means a whole page is finished in a sitting rather than abandoned half-done. That difference — finishing — is most of what makes colouring relaxing rather than another unfinished task.
A large flat shape shows up streaking and blending that a busy page would hide. If you have just bought a new set of markers and want to know how it really behaves, colour one bold shape edge to edge. You will see immediately whether the ink lays flat, how two neighbouring shades meet, and whether you are pressing too hard. Our guide to choosing a marker set explains why that matters when deciding how many colours to buy.
Both work. Alcohol markers cover the open areas evenly and quickly, which suits the format. Coloured pencils work equally well where you want texture, shading or a slower pace, and they never bleed. If you use alcohol markers, put a spare sheet behind the page you are working on — alcohol ink bleeds through ordinary paper, and that is true of every colouring book, whatever the cover says.
Every book in our bold and easy collection prints “bold and easy” on its own cover, and the artwork matches the description. They are all 48 pages at 21 × 21 cm square. The subjects run from gardens and ocean scenes to food, fashion, cosmetics and playful character pages: Into Gardens, Ocean Scene, Food, Drink & Sweets, Fashion Vibes, Glow Cosmetics, Stress Relief, Cute & Groovy and Trippy & Groovy.
A bold and easy book pairs naturally with a small marker set — 12 or 24 colours is plenty for this format, because the shapes are large and the pleasure is in flat, even colour rather than subtle shading. Our bundles put a book, a marker set and pencils together so everything arrives at once. For the wider picture on paper, markers and pencils, see the buying guide.
