Bare wood, and why that is the point

Every board is unfinished: no varnish, no colour, no printing. The grain shows through and the tone varies from one board to the next, so no two are quite alike. Bare wood also does what a plastic palette will not — it takes the shine off a colour slightly as you mix, which is closer to how that colour will look once it is dry on canvas. Plastic flatters wet paint and then surprises you.

Oval or rectangular

The oval boards are made to be held: thumb through the hole, fingers under the notch, palette moving with you as you work at an easel. The rectangular boards stay on the table and give you a long straight edge to line colours up along, which suits methodical mixing and larger sessions.
