Black Paper Pad — 150 GSM

About this product

Black paper reverses how drawing works. Instead of putting the dark down you put the light down, and everything you leave alone is already shadow. It is the quickest way to see where the light actually falls in a subject, and it makes white pencil, gel pen, metallic ink and opaque paint markers look like they are glowing.

Choose your size

• A5 — 14.8 × 21 cm: lettering practice, cards and small studies.
• A4 — 21 × 29.7 cm: the everyday size.
• A3 — 29.7 × 42 cm: finished pieces and display work.

What works on it

• White and pale coloured pencils
• White and metallic gel pens
• Opaque acrylic paint markers
• Gouache, chalk and oil pastel

Alcohol markers and dye-based ink are the exception. They are transparent, so they will not read on a dark ground — use an opaque medium.

Practical note: The supplier has not confirmed whether the sheet is dyed through or surface-coloured, so a cut or torn edge may show pale. Cut with a sharp blade, and test any wet medium on one sheet first.
