Forty-eight coloured pencils, the deepest box in the wood-free range and the one that leaves the fewest gaps.

A set this size gets chosen from rather than searched through: you plan the drawing you want instead of the one your pencils allow, and you stop treating any colour as too specialised to use. The barrels are round and lacquered in the colour of their own lead, so even at forty-eight the pencil you want is found by eye.

• Die-cut window across the front, so the barrels show through the pack
• Printed WOOD-FREE and marked JDS (Jin Dasheng), with a punched slot for hanging

This is the one to take if you draw regularly and want the range settled once. For occasional use, or for a child, the 24 and the 36 will not feel short.
