A 15 × 15 cm square is the point at which the format stops being a thumbnail: there is room for a subject and for something behind it.

Squares make you compose rather than lean on a horizon, because there is no long edge to lean on. This one is flat and rigid with a plain unprinted surface, sits square on a desk or across your knees, and is still small enough to finish in a sitting. It is the middle of the three square sizes that come in packs.
