18 × 24 cm is an exact 3:4 rectangle — the shape a phone camera takes photographs in — so a reference image fills the board with nothing cropped away.

That makes it an easy board to work from a photograph on, and a comfortable one to handle: flat, rigid, plain on the surface, and small enough to turn round in your hands as you go. It is smaller than a sheet of A4 and squarer in shape, which holds a subject more tightly and leaves less empty margin around it.
