At roughly the size of a paperback, the 18 × 13 cm oval is the largest of the small boards — the one that still travels without feeling like a compromise.

There is room here to lay out a limited palette along the top and mix underneath it, which is exactly what a colour study asks for. It is also a sensible first palette for a child: light, bare wood with nothing on it to chip or break. Wipe the surface while the paint is still wet, or let acrylic dry and peel it away.

• Oval board, 18 × 13 cm, cut 3 mm thick.
• Bare, unpainted wood with the grain showing through.
• Tone varies from board to board.
• Light enough for a child to hold comfortably.

It is the largest of the three small ovals; for a full working surface, the 30 × 20 cm board is the next size up.
